Qnexa

Qnexa

Qnexa is a new produce introduced by a prescription lab known as Vivus. They talk about it giving you an ”investigational, once a day, proprietary, oral, controlled-release formulation of low dose Phentermine and topiramate” which they say will promote significant weight loss results. They talk about it addressing appetite and satiety, which are technically the same thing in any logical mind.

But apparently, it will affect the major mechanisms that affect eating. They talk about Phentermine being first approved in 1959 with the longest history of many, and of course, Topiramate has been used since 1996 for the treatment of seizures and epilepsy.

It has also been used for migraines, and it has been investigationally used for weight loss. But does it work? Does Qnexa actually have what you would need, despite the lack of FDA approval or for that matter future approval.

The Good Things About Qnexa

Qnexa has a unanimous vote of approval in some ways. The FDA board of approval unanimously agree that Qnexa does work to promote weight loss results when used with diet and exercise. Regardless of all else, that is what one could consider a serious achievement. And it’s not particularly surprising considering the use of one of the industry’s best known appetite suppressants, Phentermine.

The Bad Things About Qnexa

Qnexa was rejected by the FDA. Yes, they all agreed that it works. We all agree that Phentermine can work! But there’s a reason that phen fen was banned. There’s a reason why no Phentermine containing formula has been approved or remained on the market since 1959. Phentermine is the only remaining source. Ironically, all of these forms have either been banned or failed to receive approval because of the side effects commonly associated with Phentermine. But while they have not proven that the other ingredient even promotes weight loss as far as we concerned, because they do not know how it works and the studies are limited, it has been associated with some of the same side effects as well as a marked risk of suicidality in users. The weight loss with Qnexa is undeniable. But so are the side effects, and it would seem that just about everybody agrees, the risks and side effects outweigh any possible benefits with Qnexa.

The Skinny

We would strongly recommend against the use of Qnexa. It does promote weight loss. But it’s not all about the results. Yes, the results are the first step, and they are important. But the safety issue is also a huge issue when it comes to products like Qnexa. It would seem that you cannot get a prescription without the risks. But when even the FDA board is rejecting it because it’s too dangerous, that should tell you something about what it’s truly worth.
