Topamax
Topamax is a medical drug that is used to treat individuals who suffer from epilepsy and it has shown some propensity as an aid to those who suffer from chronic migraine headaches as well. One of its most common side effects, when taken in regularly, is that of weight loss which is most likely what has lead you to research this product today. In a clinical trial directed to research the value of Topamax this prescription drug was shown to effect weight loss in 16 percent of the adults and 21 percent of the children involved.
The Good
As epilepsy and migraine sufferers aren’t always able to be the most active people this drug does offer a side effect for them that may actually help them to lessen the occurrences of their seizures and headaches. This is not their main health concern but it is a nice bonus to having to take a daily medication.
The Bad
Off-label use of prescription drugs happens but not often. Topamax is not made for weight loss, nor is it approved by the FDA as such. There may be a chance that your doctor may be willing to prescribe to you off-label but it is unlikely. Most doctors prefer to stick to the medications that have been developed for a certain disorder. Overall, Topamax is probably not the best option for weight loss as it also results in side effects such as memory loss and difficulty concentrating. These are not common side effects for weight loss supplements and therefore could be avoided.
The Skinny
If you are serious enough about your weight loss goals to be willing to broach the subject with your doctor than you should be willing to take the effort necessary to implement diet and exercise in your life and to find a more suitable supplement to aid you on your journey. Unless you are someone with epilepsy and/or chronic migraines who is also looking to drop some inches from your waistline and pounds from your frame we suggest you find an over the counter supplement. There are plenty with proven ingredients and research behind them and with much less invasive side effects.
